Oral surgery is a collective term for all the different types of surgeries performed on a patient's dental setup. It includes surgeries performed to place dental implants, crowns, and bridges, remove wisdom teeth, correct an unequal bite, make changes to the patient's jaw alignment, get orthodontic appliances like braces, and Invisalign, etc.
Installing dental implants: Dental implants are prosthetic tooth-like restorations used to replace missing teeth. They are placed directly in the jawbone in place of the extracted tooth. This procedure is carried out using an implantation surgery with the patient under the influence of local anesthesia.
Removal of wisdom teeth: Wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth to appear. Most often, they emerge from the gum-line if there is enough room between the teeth and jawbone. Sometimes, they tend to get stuck between the gums and the jawbone, which is a condition called impacted wisdom teeth. Such a condition would be very painful and could lead to further infections. Hence, wisdom teeth surgery is performed to remove them. Failing to remove them could cause permanent damage to the jawbone and could also lead to cysts and tumors.
Correcting unequal jaw growth: Sometimes, the upper and lower jawbones tend to have unequal development. One would be bigger, and the other would be smaller, which would result in improper speech, difficulty in chewing and swallowing food, etc. Oral surgery is used to correct the position of the jawbones so that they are aligned ideally. It is also used to change the shape of a person's face by altering the position of the facial bones.
Installing of braces: When the teeth are out of alignment or need to be repositioned, braces are installed. They also help bring changes if the teeth are drawn too far out or are too far inwards. In most cases, when braces are being installed, a tooth has to be removed from either side of the jaw to make space for the teeth to move. Hence, surgery is required for the removal of teeth and to install the braces.
Removing teeth that are damaged: Teeth, which are damaged due to external injuries and cavities, can be removed with the help of a surgery. It is called dental extraction and can be followed by placing dental restorations such as bridges or implants to replace the natural tooth.
