Improving Your Smile With a Dental Bond

Posted .

Not all damage to your teeth requires major dental work. Often, a simple dental bond can go a long way to improving your smile. If you have a tooth that is chipped, discolored, too short or misshapen, a dental bond is an inexpensive and easy way to repair the problem. A bond can be placed in one appointment, and unless the dentist needs to remove tooth decay, no anesthetic will be required.

Bonds are made from a composite resin which your dentist will color to match your tooth. After making some abrasions on your tooth, and applying a conditioning solution, the dentist will mold the bond into the proper shape of your tooth. After curing the bond with a ultraviolet light, the dentist will trim the bond to its proper length and polish it.

Dental bonds are not as durable as your natural teeth or as other types of dental work. They can be chipped by too much pressure. Hard foods, ice, and other objects can cause them to chip, and they are subject to staining by foods, beverages and tobacco use. Bonds are particularly susceptible to staining 48 hours after they are placed. You should continue to brush twice a day, floss once a day, and see your dentist for your regular appointments. With the proper care, your bond should last several years.
