The dental checkups performed at Merit Dental are designed to allow our team to examine and address the multiple facets that go into maintaining a healthy mouth. It starts with a thorough dental cleaning and polishing procedure administered by one of our friendly and highly trained dental hygienists. Drs. DeLoach and DeLoach will then examine your teeth and gums for any signs of tooth decay or periodontal disease.

At the end of the checkup, your dentists will perform a standard screening for any overt signs of oral and pharyngeal cancer. Some people are lulled into the notion that these types of cancer only afflict the elderly. Increased risk factors, such as a family history of oral cancer, tobacco use, and alcohol abuse, increase your chances of developing oral cancer at a much younger age.

Detecting oral or pharyngeal cancer early can significantly improve your treatment options and success. The screening involves an inspection of your tongue, throat, face, and neck for any swelling or abnormal discoloration. Be sure to tell your dentists about any increased risk factors or concerns you have.

If your dentists have any concerns, they will refer you to a specialist to seek further treatment.
